What Fret Wire Do Our DIY Guitar Kits Use?Updated a month ago
All of our DIY guitar kits come with frets already installed on the neck, so you don’t need to worry about sourcing or installing them yourself.
Standard Fret Size
- The standard fret size across all of our stock kits is 2.7 mm crown width by 0.9 mm crown height (medium jumbo fret wire), which is a versatile choice favored by many guitarists.
- The same size is used on guitar, bass, and baritone kits.
- Medium jumbo frets provide a comfortable balance between easy chord playing and smooth string bending.
Fret Wire Material
- Current and future electric guitar kits use stainless steel fret wire.
- Current and future bass kits use copper nickel alloy fret wire.
- These frets are fitted by machine and come with rounded, pre-finished fret ends, so no hand sanding or polishing is needed.
- Older stock kits use copper nickel alloy on both guitar and bass kits, with the fret ends finished by hand. Those ends are not as rounded or as smooth as on current kits.
- Bronze colored fret wire is no longer available. It was discontinued because the material is not hard enough and oxidizes over time, which changes its color.

Different fret sizes (e.g., smaller vintage-style frets or larger jumbo frets).
Alternative fret wire materials, depending on availability.
