Scale Length vs. String Length

If you are building a DIY guitar kit or setting up a new build, you might pull out your tape measure, check the distance from the nut to the bridge saddles, and panic. If you are building a Fender-style guitar, you expect a 25.5-inch measurement. But when the tape reads closer to 25.6 inches, you might think something was manufactured incorrectly.

Don't worry—your kit is likely perfectly fine. This common point of confusion comes down to the subtle but crucial difference between scale length and string length. Here is what you need to know to ensure your guitar is set up correctly.


What is Scale Length?

The scale length is the fundamental mathematical measurement that dictates the spacing of the frets on your guitar's fretboard. For example, most guitars modeled after Fender designs feature a classic 25.5-inch scale length.

However, you cannot accurately verify your scale length by measuring the entire span from the nut to the bridge.

How to measure it correctly:

  1. Measure the distance from the inside edge of the nut to the center of the 12th fret. (the metal fret not the middle of the fret board)

  2. Multiply that number by two.

If the measurement to the 12th fret is 12.75 inches, doubling it gives you a perfect 25.5-inch scale length. This confirms that the neck was fretted and manufactured correctly.

What is String Length?

The string length is the actual physical distance from the nut to the exact point where the string makes contact with the bridge saddle.

Unlike scale length, string length is dynamic. It will always be slightly longer than the scale length, typically by 1/16th of an inch to 1/8th of an inch.

Why the extra length?When you press a string down to fret a note, you are physically stretching the string. Thicker strings (like your low E) stretch and react differently than thinner strings. To keep the notes in tune as you play up the neck (a concept known as intonation), the guitar needs to compensate for the thickness of the string and the stretching effect.

Because of this, the low E string might have an actual string length of 25.625 inches on a 25.5-inch scale guitar.

How Guitars Compensate for String Thickness

Because every string requires a slightly different string length to play in tune, guitar bridges are designed with built-in compensation:

  • Adjustable Bridge Saddles: Electric guitars typically feature individually adjustable saddles, allowing you to move the resting point of each string forward or backward to achieve perfect intonation.

  • Compensated Acoustic Saddles: Acoustic guitars usually have a single, solid saddle piece, but the top edge is carved and staggered to change the resting point depending on the string.

  • Angled Bridges: On Gibson-style guitars with Tune-o-matic bridges, you will notice the entire bridge is mounted at a slight horizontal angle. This is an intentional design choice to instantly add more string length to the thicker bass strings.

The Takeaway for DIY Builders

When you are doing a "dry fit" of your DIY guitar kit to check the geometry before final assembly, remember this simple rule:

Expected String Length = Scale Length + (1/16" to 1/8")

As long as your bridge placement allows the saddles to fall within this range, your geometry is correct. Once the guitar is completely built and strung up, you can adjust the saddles to dial in the final, fine-tuned intonation.
