How to Safely Install Push-In Bushing Tuners (Press-Fit Ferrules)
Some of our guitar kits (like the L3 Hollowbody) come with tuners that use push-in bushings (also known as press-fit ferrules).
Unlike modern sealed tuners that use a threaded hex nut and washer to tighten down from the front, these vintage-style tuners rely on friction to stay in the peghead holes. The actual tuner mechanism is then secured to the back of the headstock with small mounting screws.
Because they require a tight friction fit, improper installation can easily cause damage to your guitar.
⚠️ CRITICAL WARNING: Please do not use a standard metal hammer directly on the metal bushings to force them into the headstock. Doing this can very easily crack the wood or chip your finish.
Step-by-Step Installation Guide
Follow these steps to safely install your push-in tuners without damaging your kit:
1. Seat the Bushings by HandStart by pushing the bushings into the front holes of the headstock as far as you can using just your fingers.
2. Tap the Bushings FlushTo get the bushings perfectly flush with the face of the headstock, gently tap them in using a soft rubber or plastic mallet.
Alternative Method A: If you do not have a soft mallet, place a flat piece of scrap wood over the bushing and gently tap the wood with a regular hammer.
Alternative Method B: You can use a C-clamp with some protective padding (like leather or thick cloth) to slowly press the bushings into the holes.
3. Insert the TunersOnce the front bushings are seated securely, flip the neck over and insert the tuning peg shafts through the holes from the back of the headstock.
4. Align the TunersUse a straightedge, such as a small ruler, and press it against the flat bottom edges of the tuner bodies on the back of the headstock. This will ensure they are all sitting perfectly straight and aligned uniformly with each other.
5. Drill Pilot Holes and SecureOnce aligned, mark the screw hole locations. Drill shallow pilot holes first so the mounting screws do not snap and the headstock wood does not split. Finally, secure each tuner to the back of the headstock using the small mounting screws provided in your hardware bag.
