Polishing is the last stage of a gloss finish, and it only works if the surface underneath is flat.

Seal the colour coat with sanding sealer, let it dry, then sand it back starting at 320 grit and working up to 400. Spray your clear gloss coats and give them about a week to harden.

Hold the body up to the light. That orange-peel texture is what you are sanding out. Flat-sand at 800 grit, then 1200, then wet-sand at 1500, keeping water away from the pickup cavity and the pre-drilled holes.

Finish with a heavy rubbing compound, three passes over the whole body, then a finer cutting compound.
