Do the DIY kits come ready for painting or staining?Updated 24 days ago
Yes. Our kits arrive unfinished and generally pre-sanded to a good starting point so you can apply your own paint, stain or oil finish. We still recommend a light final sand and surface prep before finishing.
Before you finish, we suggest:
Inspect & fix blemishes (dents/chips) and then move to final sanding.
Sand progressively (e.g., ~180 → 240; up to ~400 if staining raw wood), then raise the grain with a damp cloth/denatured alcohol and sand smooth.
Go gently on veneers: maple tops are thin—avoid sanding through, and apply stain lightly to prevent veneer bubbling.
Clean & mask: wipe the body (acetone or mild detergent + water) and remove shop dust; mask fretboards/F-holes or areas you don’t want finished.
Fill open pores on woods like mahogany when you want a smooth finish.
Choose a finish: oils/waxes are simpler than spray finishes and look great; polish after the clear coats cure.
Work safely: ventilate well and use an appropriate mask and basic PPE.
Handy supplies/tools: clean rags (for applying stain/cleaning) and a hardwood sanding block help you get an even, pro-looking surface.
